डॉ. उत्कर्ष गुप्ता, Consultant – GI & Minimal Access Surgery at Silver Streak Hospital, recently addressed the media on an important yet often overlooked health concern – kidney stones. Speaking to journalists, Dr. Gupta highlighted the critical role diet plays in preventing the formation of kidney stones, which affect millions worldwide.

Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys and can cause severe pain, urinary issues, and long-term kidney complications. While genetic and lifestyle factors contribute to their development, dietary habits are a major controllable risk factor.

Dr. Gupta advised limiting or avoiding the following seven categories of foods to reduce the risk:

  1. High-oxalate foods – such as spinach, beetroot, and nuts, which increase oxalate levels in urine.
  2. Excessive salt – which raises calcium levels in urine, promoting stone formation.
  3. Sugary drinks – especially sodas with high fructose corn syrup.
  4. Red meat – which can elevate uric acid levels.
  5. Refined carbohydrates – including white bread, pastries, and processed snacks.
  6. High-protein diets – particularly when animal protein intake is excessive.
  7. Foods high in added sugar – such as candies and desserts.

“By making mindful dietary choices, staying well-hydrated, and maintaining balanced nutrition, individuals can significantly lower their chances of developing kidney stones,” Dr. Gupta emphasized.
