What Is Medical Tourism?

Medical tourism is when a person travels to another country to get medical treatment. People do it to save money, to skip long waiting lists, or to reach specialist doctors and procedures they cannot easily get at home. The trip usually combines the treatment itself with travel, recovery, and follow-up care.

India is now one of the leading medical tourism countries in the world. Patients from Africa, the Middle East, the UK, the USA, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia flock to Indian hospitals, which provide world-class health care at a much lower cost than in the West with internationally trained doctors and modern technology.

Why patients choose India

Big savings

Treatment costs are about 60-90% cheaper than in the USA, UK, or Europe.

Very little delay

Complex surgery is often performed within days or weeks, rather than months as in the West.

Skilled doctors

Many doctors in India have been trained or worked abroad, and they have a large number of cases.

Accredited hospitals

Top hospitals are accredited by NABH and JCI, which are the same quality standards that are used internationally.

English Friendly

Care teams speak English, and interpreters are arranged for other languages.

Why India Is a Leading Destination for Medical Treatment

India is a major destination for international patients for major surgical procedures, with more than 500,000 patients treated annually. The answer is a combination of quality, speed, and price that is uncommon. Let’s see how India’s system is different from those that international patients are leaving behind.

Medical Visa for India — What You Need to Know

To get treatment in India, you need an e-Medical Visa (M-Visa), not a tourist visa. You apply online through the Government of India’s official India e-Visa portal—use only this official site. Companions travel on a separate e-Medical Attendant Visa (MX).

Key facts

  • Must have invitation letter from registered Indian hospital: You need to have a valid visa invitation letter from a registered Indian hospital, which you can get from SilverStreak.

  • Attendants: up to two (usually close blood relatives) per patient, on MX visas co-terminus with your visa.

  • Validity: The e-medical visa is usually granted for 60 days from the date of arrival, which can be extended by the FRRO for a longer period of time.

  • Apply in advance: e-Visas are issued within approximately 72 hours and can be applied for up to 120 days in advance.

  • Registration with FRRO: Longer stays may require registration with the FRRO upon arrival — our team will assist you.

Documents usually needed

  • Passport is valid for 6 months or more
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Letter of recommendation from a physician or physician assistant for the child (we will provide this if you do not have one)
  • Medical reports in support of the need for treatment
  • Proof of funds and proof of relationship for attendants.

Visa requirements differ from country to country and are subject to change. Please verify with the local Indian embassy/consulate, and our coordinators will assist you with your paperwork.

Recovery, Stay & Practical Tips

Planning your stay

  1. Length of stay: This varies from procedure to procedure, but many surgeries require 7–14 days in India, including recovery time, and your coordinator will be able to give you an estimate for your surgery.
  2. Accommodation: assistance with nearby accommodation for attendants and extended recovery.
  3. Recovery support: physiotherapy, dietary advice, and nursing care are provided as required.

What to bring

  1. All original medical records, scans and prescriptions
  2. Your passport, visa documents and invitation letter
  3. A list of current medicines (generic names)
  4. Clothing that is comfortable and any personal medical devices.

A note on diet and aftercare

Our clinical nutrition team prepares easy, healthy, and culture-appropriate meals. You will be given a clear discharge summary, medicine list, and follow-up schedule before you leave for home, which will help your local doctor to keep your care going smoothly.
